Biography - David Sloat
Since graduating from The Art Institute of Houston in 1994, my day job has been that of an advertising agency art director and recently, I’ve also decided to take my part-time passion - painting - much more seriously. I have work dating from the early 90's in numerous private collections and my most recent show with The Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast in April of 2013 went very well, with five of the seven paintings on display selling to collectors.
As far as what inspires me is concerned, I’ve always heard that as an artist you should try to depict what you know - and I know a little bit about Texas. From the boats and abandoned lighthouses of the steamy Gulf Coast to the missions and forgotten places of the Trans Pecos, I’ve always been interested in what exists slightly off the beaten path - places that don’t always make it into "the brochure”.
Currently, I'm working on a variety of subjects found along the western shore of Galveston Bay - a region most people bypass in their hurry to get down to more tourist-friendly Galveston. I now realize that this part of the Bay encompasses a lot of beautiful and sometimes surreal scenery that I think, deserves to be seen on canvas. That's the goal anyway - I hope you agree.
